Danielle Mortimer is a 23 year old senior at Florida International University where she is majoring in Psychology, with a minor in Criminal Justice. She was born on September 3rd, 1983, in Miami, Florida to parents Robert and Roberta Mortimer. Her mom was a professional ballerina for her entire life, dancing with New York City Ballet as well as the Boston Ballet. Danielle began dancing at the age 6 and through her adolescence and teenage years she won numerous state and national titles such as: Junior Miss Dance of Florida, Teen Miss Star Systems, and Miss Dance Educators of America. During this time Danielle participated in a few pageants, always winning the talent awards!
When Danielle was 18 years old, she participated in the Florida Cinderella Scholarship Program’s state pageant, and captured the title of “Florida Cinderella
Woman”. That summer she attended the Cinderella Scholarship Program’s International Finals and won the title of “International Cinderella Woman”. After participating in this pageant system, Danielle knew it was time to experience the Miss America pageants.
Prior to be crowned Miss Sun Coast, Danielle has held the titles of Miss Miami 2005 and Miss Homestead 2006. As Miss Miami, she finished in the Top 15 at Miss Florida and as Miss Homestead, she finished in the top 5, placing as the 4th runner up. She also received the Sonicare Smile Award! Danielle is hoping that her 3rd trip to Miss Florida is the charm, as she would be honored to represent her state at the 2008 Miss America Pageant.
“Just Breathe”: Promoting the Fight Against Emphysema, is the message behind Danielle’s advocacy for creating more awareness for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, commonly known as COPD. She is engaged in multiple projects to increase the funding and the awareness of this incapacitating disease. She is an active member of “EFFORTS”, a non profit organization that provides online support to Emphysema patients and their families through emails and message board conversations. Through her advocacy, she urges COPD patients and their families to become proactive in their fight against this disease by lobbying for additional funding through letter writing campaigns. She is also an advocate and volunteer for the American Lung Association. On behalf of this organization, she collects signatures for various petitions to send to Legislators and members of Congress to help increase funding for COPD research. Currently, she has just been named as a support group facilitator with the American Lung Association. With this job, Danielle organizes, promotes, and conducts support group meetings for COPD patients as well as their family members. Her commitment to bringing about awareness about COPD stems from her personal experience with her father who was diagnosed with COPD a couple of years ago.
